Lucasfilm has been canceling their upcoming Star Wars movie amidst their attempt at bringing back the movie magic for the franchise, and now, even Disney Plus has put forth in dropping one of Lucasfilm’s biggest IPs on the streaming service’s library, Willow.
According to Deadline, the Disney+ series has been canceled after just one season on the streaming service. The decision to drop the series was made two months after the last episode aired on Disney Plus. While reasons for canceling the show remains unknown as of writing, Willow is actually one of Lucasfilm’s most important IPs on the streaming site, which indicates a likely chance of reviving the series someday.
Willow is based on the 1988 fantasy film bearing the same title that was directed by Ron Howard, and based on a story by George Lucas, the founder of Lucasfilm. Now, despite its positive ratings and reviews, leading the series to hold 83% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Disney pulled a Netflix move for reasons that have yet to be revealed to the public.

It is worth mentioning that Lucasfilm has been quite occupied in handling other movie franchises such as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as well as new upcoming Star Wars shows such as Ahsoka and The Acolyte, so there is a possibility that they had to pull the plug on Willow to make room for their prioritized projects. It is uncertain whether or not the series would ever return for a second season.
In addition, Disney is looking to reduce their budgets on their ongoing projects, which also includes Marvel Studios’ Phase 5, impacting the release dates of multiple MCU series, and potentially the reason behind why The Marvels had to be moved to a November release date, instead.
This year, Marvel Studios is only releasing two TV shows, namely, Loki Season 2, which features the Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan in a reportedly James Bond-like role, and Secret Invasion, with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke marking her MCU debut.
