Disney Boss Wants To Revamp MCU & Star Wars Shows Due To Expensive Losses

Marvel Studios has been deducting shows and films from their initial 2023 slate for Marvel Phase 5 to prevent the rise of the so-called “superhero fatigue”, but it seems that even Disney CEO Bob Iger is also doing his part by wanting to revamp MCU and Star Wars shows to prevent further expensive losses from Disney Plus.

The early February earnings of Disney resulted in firing 7000 employees, Disney Plus suffering from a shocking drop of subscribers, and with Iger proclaiming that the company aims to “embark on a significant transformation”. Part of this is producing Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2.

Seeing as Disney+ is also the home streaming platform for billion-dollar franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars, there is no denying that their highest selling shows would have to take priority.

Recently, Iger pledged to be “better at curating” releases, specifically from Marvel Studios’ new plans on their Disney+ projects, which comes as a result of the Disney CEO’s “franchise recession” mandate (via Hollywood Reporter). Part of this result is limiting the 2023 release of Disney shows to Loki Season 2 and Secret Invasion.

Iger revealed that their budgets have gotten “extraordinarily expensive”, given that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reportedly cost $250 million and Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny nearly reached $300 million (while also being the most expensive Lucasfilm in history), so it is only logical for the Disney CEO to stand his ground on which shows would take priority.

Being the opener for Marvel Phase 5, MCU fans had high expectations on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania bringing the overall tone for what the new Avengers will be like in the future. However, given that the Ant-Man threequel is on the verge of becoming MCU’s worst, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige’s decision on halting some MCU projects is becoming the next best choice to preserve their quality.
