Disability Activist Wants Marvel To Turn The MCU’s Hawkeye Into A Deaf Hero

Marvel Studios might have taken some liberties in adapting stories and characters from its various Marvel comic source material to the big screen, but now a disability activist is hoping that the studio turns Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye into a deaf hero just the way he is in the comics.

Taking to Twitter, disability activist and model Nyle DiMarco decided to post a Mic article discussing the lack of diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure there might be more heroes of color now, but according to Marco, there should be representation of disability in the MCU as well.

"Disability is also a part of diversity @Mic. Hawkeye is actually deaf and (the) Marvel Cinematic Universe made the character hearing," DiMarco pointed out in his post.

Disability is also a part of diversity, @mic.

After reading DiMarco's comment, Mic acknowledged the article's oversight and then invited the disability activist for a discussion. DiMarco then went to talk about how people often forget that disability should also be a part of diversity, not just race and gender.

"We are part of diversity as people. There are a couple of issues where specifically Hawkeye is deaf. And so they brought in an actor who can hear instead. I think it would have made [better movies]… if they brought a deaf person in to play a deaf Hawkeye," the disability activist explained.

"I mean, no offense, but Hawkeye in the Avengers is boring. A lot of people don't even like him… Let's have a deaf actor in there instead, why not?" DiMarco added.

There has been a strong call for representation in Hollywood the past few years, and though Marvel has been doing its part in bringing in more female superheroes and superheroes of color, it barely has any heroes with disabilities.

Hawkeye has been deaf in a few Marvel comic books like the 1983 Hawkeye #4 by Mark Gruenwald. It would definitely be interesting to see a deaf Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maybe Marvel could make the sharpshooter deaf in Avengers 4? Who knows.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently screening in cinema.
