Avengers: Infinity War Writers Acknowledge the MCU's MacGuffin Problem

Avengers: Infinity War was a culmination of many films, so the fact that it came out at all and was praised for it should be considered an accomplishment. That being said, the movie isn't perfect and one of its biggest problems was the over-reliance on a MacGuffin, or in this film's case, six of them.

Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely recently revealed to NY Times that if there was one thing they could change from the movie, it would be the fact that it has six MacGuffins. One is usually bad enough but six is overkill and could have killed the film had it not been built up for years. The pitch-perfect cast helps too.

"Had we started from scratch, we would not have chosen six damn MacGuffins. That's not that helpful. It was difficult to get that all in."

For those unfamiliar, a MacGuffin is a film term for a really important item that drives the plot. Transformers had the Allspark, Lord of the Rings had the ring, and Avengers: Infinity War has all six Infinity Stones.

Because the film was structured well, the race to get all six stones was actually pretty exciting. Had it been handled poorly, it could have been a boring film, so the writers can pat themselves on the back for that. Thanos did end up winning and we're going to have to wait and see how Avengers 4 will capitalize on that jaw-dropper of an ending.

Avengers 4 will hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
