Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy has clarified that the upcoming MCU movie is not considered a "Deadpool 3" project.

A lot of fans have been anticipating the release of Deadpool and Wolverine this summer since it is the Merc with a Mouth's official MCU debut and will feature appearances from several characters from the Fox X-Men franchise.

It is also considered to be the third installment in the Deadpool series given that Ryan Reynolds is continuing in the role. However, the director is not considering it as a threequel for a particular reason.

In a recent appearance at CinemaCon, Levy opened up about his work on Deadpool and Wolverine and why he is not considering it as a third installment of the Deadpool film series.

He explained that the MCU film is distinctly a two-hander adventure with the titular heroes which is why it is not considered to be a "Deadpool 3" movie.

"As far as crafting the Deadpool and Wolverine story, I just felt privileged every day because you're talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles. It also gave me an opportunity. It's the third Deadpool movie, but it's not Deadpool 3," he said.

"It's a different thing that's very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it's not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure."

While the first trailer may have suggested that Deadpool will be the central focus of the movie, it looks like fans should expect that the two heroes are leading the film and perhaps the next trailer will give us an extended look at the character's partnership.

Levy's comments made a lot of sense since it is becoming clear that the film is all about the two heroes given what the title has indicated. It is now very exciting to see how their buddy relationship will look like considering the chemistry that Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have in real life.

Deadpool and Wolverine is set to arrive in theaters this July 26.
