Deadpool 2 Director Talks About What It Was Like Setting Up The X-Force Movie

20th Century Fox gave director David Leitch a lot of creative freedom during the production of Deadpool 2. Leitch didn't have that many restrictions when it came to developing the film, even though the Deadpool sequel had to help establish the studio's next mutant movie, X-Force.

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com, Leitch opened up about how he was asked to direct Deadpool 2.

The filmmaker had originally been hired to work on the X-Force film, however, while he was working on the pitch for the movie, 20th Century Fox offered him the chance to direct the sequel to its original Deadpool movie, a raunchy superhero film centered around Ryan Reynold's Merc with a Mouth.

"When I took the job, I had just been hired to develop X-Force and I was working on my pitch of the world and the characters that I wanted to use into the universe when I got the call about Deadpool 2 and like, 'Hey, would you be interested in directing Deadpool 2?'" Leitch said.
"And I was like, wow, that's a big, daunting task, because X-Force was like, 'Okay, I get to start the universe and then I'm not going to be dealing with the expectation of a sequel, and I'll have my imprint on something.'"

According to Leitch, working making sure that Deadpool 2 would help establish the X-Force wasn't that difficult because he had previously created a pitch for the X-Force film.

"Then when I met with Ryan [Reynolds] and we discussed where they thought, Ryan, Rhett [Reese] and Paul [Wernick], where Deadpool 2 was gonna go and like, it is really an introduction to X-Force," Leitch said. "It kinda made sense because I was already sort of working my pitch into that."

Leitch did pretty well working on Deadpool 2. Not only did the film beat Avengers: Infinity War at the box office (well, the Marvel movie was already at its third week in cinemas), it also outperformed Solo: A Star Wars Story's opening weekend. Now, we can't wait to see what Fox has ready for us in Deadpool 3.

Deadpool 2 is currently screening in cinemas.
