Deadpool 2 Director On The Film Beating Solo’s Box Office Weekend

Star Wars movies are usually big cinematic events that bring in a lot of commercial and critical success to Disney and Lucasfilm, so it came as a huge disappointment when Solo: A Star Wars Story did very poorly at the box office during its opening weekend.

However, Deadpool 2 outperforming Solo: A Star Wars Story didn't really come as a surprise to the film's director David Leitch. During its opening weekend, Deadpool 2 managed to bring in more than $125 million, a sum much larger than Solo: A Star Wars Story's $84 million haul.

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com, Leitch went on gushing about the passion of the film's cast and crew. According to the director, it was this passion gave Deadpool 2 it's record-setting opening weekend.

"We always approached everything in Deadpool, Ryan and I, we tried to say, 'We can't operate from a place of fear," Leitch said. "We knew we were going to open up near Han Solo, but we knew we also were going to make a... You know, Deadpool was a very special brand. And so, it was like, they're different movies and let's just aggressively go forward and make the best movie possible and who knows."

Deadpool 2 was a very passionate film. Effusing the raunchy and brassy humor of the original Deadpool movie, Deadpool 2 brought in just about as much laughs to the audience. Solo: A Star Wars Story's production may have just been as passionate as Deadpool 2, but the film suffered from directorial shake-ups and poor marketing campaigns. It also doesn't help that the spin-off is an experimental movie that dabbles with a story outside the main Star Wars saga.

Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story are currently screening in cinemas.
