DC Comics Reveals New Batman Creative Team Taking Over From Tom King

With Tom King leaving DC's mainline Batman title this December, fans have been wondering about who would replace the acclaimed/controversial writer. Staying on a series for 85 issues will leave an impact after all and many are saddened since he was slated to write more, though his upcoming Batman/Catwoman maxi-series should solve that issue. Anyway, DC Comics has announced the new Batman creative team and they are very familiar names.

So, who is going to write Batman #86 when it comes out? None other than James Tynion IV, who will be paired up with artists Tony Daniel, Daniel Miki, and Tomeu Morey. Tynion IV was responsible for the acclaimed Rebirth run of Detective Comics that had Batman form a team with Batwoman and Red Robin, among others, while Tony Daniel is actually drawing the current City of Bane arc alongside other artists. Tony Daniel also wrote 12 issues and an annual of Detective Comics during The New 52, even illustrating some of them.

Tynion IV had this to say about taking over from King (via Newsarama):

"I loved writing stories for [Batman] Eternal, Detective Comics, and even Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but my desire to tell a Batman story, one focusing solely on Bruce Wayne instead of an ensemble, is what drove me back to the Batcave. I want to dig deep into the Bat himself and tell an epic story that pushes him to his absolute limits. I want to tell a Batman story like the kinds I grew up loving, one that embraces the horror and gothic elegance of Gotham and dives deep into Batman's greatest villains."

As a fan of Tynion IV's Detective Comics run, I can't wait to see what he does for Batman. While I am sad to see King leave, his upcoming Batman/Catwoman series should be promising and he probably has more DC projects lined up.

Batman #86 will come out in January 2020.
