Chris McQuarrie Directing Two Mission Impossible Movies Back to Back

Mission Impossible: Fallout as a huge hit from last year, and it's cemented Chris McQuarrie as an avant-garde action director. While rumors have been going around that he was going to direct a DC movie next, it's been announced that he's working on more Mission Impossible.

According to Variety, McQuarrie has signed off to direct two Mission Impossible films back to back, and they will release a year after the other a la Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The seventh MI film is set to come out in 2021 with the eighth movie coming out 2022.

As for people wondering why MI7 won't release in 2020 instead, the production is said to be making room for Tom Cruise's schedule as he's going to be working on Top Gun: Maverick.

Personally, I would have loved to see McQuarrie try his hand on some other movies besides Mission Impossible. I don't want him to end up like David Yates who's been making Harry Potter films since 2007. I mean, let someone else try their hand at the Wizarding World; how is it that Guillermo del Toro hasn't been tapped to direct at least one Fantastic Beasts movie?

Also, this officially breaks the tradition of the Mission Impossible films which have had different directors with every installment. Since before McQuarrie came to the picture with Rogue Nation, each MI film has had a different director from Brian de Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird.

Catch Mission Impossible 7 when it comes out sometime in 2021.
