Top Gun 2: Tom Cruise Records PSA About Modern TVs and the Problem with ‘Video Interpolation’

Tom Cruise is currently working on Top Gun: Maverick, but he's taken some time to record a PSA with Mission Impossible: Fallout director Chris McQuarrie. This is a video about modern televisions and ‘video interpolation' and it's actually affecting the way we watch movies and TV at home.

Check it out:

If you've been wondering why some of your films look weird in your new TV, this is due to the technology of video interpolation which actually messes with the frame rate and gives what some other would call the ‘soap opera effect' to their films.

This has become a big deal for filmmakers because a lot of people are seeing their movies not in the way that they're intended. What's more, it's actually hard to turn the tech off with these new televisions; most of which come with the VI feature already turned on.

Until the manufacturers can do something about it, you can still research on how to turn of VI by searching "Turn off motion smoothing [your TV brand here]." I'm sure some people end up confused when their new TV comes in and their films suddenly look like they're in a middle of a soap opera.

As someone who likes to enjoy films, I'm actually pretty happy to be made aware about this actual problem with modern televisions. At some point, I thought I just had to get used to the weird frame rate, but now I know it's an actual problem that filmmakers want to get handled.

Hopefully we get some kind of update on this problem soon.
