Bungou Stray Dogs is one of the most imaginative shounen anime out there, featuring the best literary references and book abilities for each character based on classic literature. The possibilities feel endless, so here are some characters and abilities we would like to see in Bungou Stray Dogs.

RELATED: Who Is the Strongest in Bungou Stray Dogs?

  1. Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri is the first character we would love to see in a future installment of the Bungou Stray Dogs manga and anime.

The author of The Divine Comedy played a key role in the collective imagination when it comes to heaven and hell.

We imagine that his power would be called Divine Comedy, or perhaps Inferno, and be associated with heaven or hell.

  2. William Shakespeare

We think that the Bard of English Literature would be an amazing addition to Bungou Stray Dogs' literary cast.

Shakespeare's plays are so deeply ingrained in popular culture that sometimes we use his phrases without even realizing it. Plus, there are countless retellings of his works.

We'd love to see a Midsummer Night's Dream ability, which could perhaps mess up the opponents' feelings for each other, causing chaos.

For a lesser-known play-ability, we'd recommend Comedy of Errors, which could make the Shakespeare-inspired character take the form of his opponent and cause all sorts of misunderstandings.

  3. Charles Dickens

We would love to see more classic Victorian authors like Charles Dickens in the detective anime!

Given how many of his books are adapted for the media and well known in popular culture, the possibilities for a Dickens-inspired character's powers are endless.

Great Expectations could be a mental power based on how the yielder expects to perform in a battle -- or even something associated with money, similar to Fitzgerald's ability.

Hard Times would also be an interesting power that could be interpreted in all kinds of sinister ways.

  4. The Bronte Sisters

Speaking of iconic Victorian writers, we'd absolutely love to see either Emily Bronte or all three Bronte sisters inspire one or more Bungou Stray Dogs characters!

Our top suggested ability would be Wuthering Heights, and it would have to do with the strong winds in the moors where the sisters lived.

  5. Jane Austen

While several interesting Bungou Stray Dogs characters are female, the vast majority are male, so we want to see more female authors represented.

If Jane Austen were to inspire a character in the fantasy anime, the obvious power for her would be Persuasion.

This could be the ability to persuade others to do anything she asks of them.

  6. Emily Dickinson

Several American authors have already been represented in Bungou Stray Dogs. Even so, poet Emily Dickinson could be an elegant addition.

We'd love to see a Bungou Stray Dogs character based on her as there are tons of possible abilities she could have.

Given how death often features in Dickinson's work, it would be very interesting to see a mild-mannered loner yield one of the deadliest powers.

Alternatively, it'd be great if her power was associated with nature, particularly with flies or birds, which also feature prominently in her poems.

  7. Oscar Wilde

A character based on Oscar Wilde could feel right at home among Bungou Stray Dogs' quirky cast!

As for his power, it would likely be named Dorian Gray or Portrait. We imagine it as the ability to make a copy of himself to take damage for him during a battle.

  8. George Orwell

Bungou Stray Dogs characters feature all sorts of characters and abilities, from Akiko's power to heal deadly wounds to Steinbeck's power to make vines grow.

George Orwell's dystopian world could be another source of inspiration.

While 1984 is the first book that comes to mind, what we'd really love to see is an Animal Farm book power featuring scary and oddly politically savvy pigs.

  9. Victor Hugo

A Victor Hugo character in Bungou Stray Dogs would also be great as we'd love to see more French authors in the manga and anime.

His ability could be something from Les Miserables, or even from the lesser-known and quite creepy The Man Who Laughs.

  10. Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude is a truly iconic work, and seeing classic authors from different backgrounds inspire the anime would be great.

We can see a character based on the Colombian author yielding a power associated with the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude - and given the weird magical realist stuff happening there, the possibilities are endless!
