Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live? is finally out now in Japanese cinemas, and it was revealed that the film’s theme is sung by popular singer Kenshi Yonezu, who is best known for performing the Chainsaw Man anime opening.
Yonezu being the film’s theme performer is a big deal given the popularity of both himself and Ghibli, though the lack of promotion for it is in line with the unusual release strategy of Studio Ghibli for this new movie.
But what this proves is that Kenshi Yonezu is everywhere now, whether it’s in games, movies, or anime.
Kenshi Yonezu Is Singing Every Theme Now
Although he is now best known for his Chainsaw Man opening theme, Kenshi Yonezu has arguably been one of Japan’s most popular singers for years now. His popularity arguably exploded from around 2017 onwards.
For starters, he performed the My Hero Academia Season 2 theme Peace Sign as well as orion for March Comes In Like a Lion. Then in 2018, he released Lemon, which became a huge hit in Japan.
Since then, Yonezu has been tapped to perform songs for a wide range of titles.
Just recently, Square Enix enlisted Yonezu to create and perform the song Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing for Final Fantasy XVI.
Last year, Yonezu was also hired for the Shin Ultraman movie that’s produced by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. For the film, Yonezu performed the theme song M87.

Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘How Do You Live?’ Opening Song to Be Performed by Yonezu
At this point, Yonezu is one of the most in-demand artists in Japan, so it’s no surprise that he was tapped by Studio Ghibli to perform the theme for How Do You Live? by Hayao Miyazaki.
Yonezu’s song for the film is titled Chikyugi and it is played in the film’s cinema screening, as confirmed by Comic Natalie.
The song has not been released yet, and its announcement came as a surprise. This is in line with the film’s minimal promotion strategy.
Though today, Studio Ghibli confirmed on Twitter Yonezu’s involvement in the film.
This isn’t the first time that Yonezu has collaborated with an esteemed Japanese filmmaker.
Back in 2020, he released a music video that’s directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, one of Japan’s most renowned directors.
How Do You Live? is now screening in Japanese cinemas. However, there’s no word yet on when it will be released internationally.
