Celine Dion's Ashes Wasn't Originally Made for Deadpool 2

There was a lot to like about Deadpool 2, from its crass jokes and over-the-top fight scenes to the surprising amount of heart the film had. One thing fans didn't expect to like was Ashes, the Celine Dion song that ended up being the film's official theme. It was and still is a great song and also made the James Bond-like opening a treat to watch.

So it might surprise fans to know that the song was not made for the film. This is shocking since the song's lyrics seem to match the film's themes but that wasn't the case as X-Men producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg revealed how they got this song for the sequel.

Kinberg spoke with SyFy about getting the song, revealing that they were auditioning songs and Columbia Records approached them with Ashes. Before choosing Ashes, they considered hiring Adele to sing a new song since she sang the amazing theme to Skyfall but chose Ashes after it surprisingly worked with the film's themes.

"We were auditioning songs [for the interlude] and Columbia [Records] had a song that they felt could be a hit and was a ballad... I just laid it against the imagery and I'm like, 'Holy sh**, it's thematic to the idea of a lot of the characters in the movie. Losing everything and hopefully, something beautiful can come out of it."

Ryan Reynolds also joked that the song was chosen because Dion is Canadian like him before conceding how she "sings the ever-loving sh*t out of that song." He's not wrong either as the song is a genuinely good one to listen to, even to those that don't like the movie.

Deadpool 2 is available now on Blu-Ray and digital services. Ashes can be purchased on iTunes and downloaded on Spotify premium.
