CBS All Access Head On How Patrick Stewart Was Brought Back To The Star Trek Franchise

Star Trek fans couldn't help but get excited when word came out over the weekend that Patrick Stewart would be returning as CBS All Access' brand new Star Trek series. The legendary Star Trek: The Next Generation actor was well-loved as Jean-Luc Picard, and fans couldn't wait to see Stewart return and play the role in a new Star Trek television series.

Speaking in an interview with Deadline, CBS TV Studios president David Stapf reveals that the person behind Stewart's return is actually Alex Kurtzman, the co-creator and showrunner behind the popular CBS All Access series, Star Trek: Discovery.

"It came to us, as do all things Trek now, through Alex Kurtzman, with the idea of, wouldn't it be cool to do something Next Gen-oriented, and/or get Patrick Stewart and/or any of those iconic Next Gen characters," Stapf explained. "As Patrick himself has said, he was of the opinion that ‘I've done that character,' but he got a meeting with Alex and some of the other guys and they won him over. The deal didn't take that long once he decided to do it."

What's, even more, exiting though is that the good news won't stop with the new series. During the interview, Stapf also said that he's hoping for fresh Star Trek content for subscribers of CBS All Access all year-round, saying that he knows that the franchise draws an audience and noting that Discovery has actually done quite well for itself.

Who knows, if the new Star Trek series does manage to kick off and do just as well as Discovery, fans will probably get even more Star Trek shows on CBS All Access.
