Captain Marvel Producer Explains What The Studio Took From DC’s Wonder Woman

Captain Marvel might be Marvel Studios very first female-led superhero movie, but Brie Larson's Carol Danvers isn't the first heroine to wow the comic book movie industry with her own standalone film. Two years ago, Wonder Woman broke barriers with its successful premiere, proving to Hollywood executives that moviegoers also wanted to see comic book movies focused on female superheroes.

Visiting the set of Captain Marvel, ComicBook.com got to speak with the film's executive producer Jonathan Schwartz and during their discussion, the Marvel Big Wig was asked how exactly Wonder Woman influenced Carol Danvers' debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to the producer, Wonder Woman helped push producers to reconsider their prejudice against female-led comic book movies.

"What was so great about Wonder Woman was talking to female audience members afterward about how they felt watching the movie. A lot of the people I talked to just said, 'I've never felt like that watching a movie before in my entire life. That character resonated [with] me in ways I didn't even know a character could resonate with me.' Which was great to hear, and kind of an amazing thing," the producer explained during the interview with the news outlet.

Of course, this doesn't mean that Captain Marvel is going to take all its cues from the DC Extended Universe installment. Marvel Studios is going to make its first female-led comic book movie a distinct entry in the MCU.

"I think it helped us understand how important movies like this are. So, in terms of making the movie feel distinct, I think all these movies chart their own courses anyway… I think that means making the movie feel distinct, not just from other female-lead movies," the executive explained, "but from all the other Marvel movies as well, which I think we try to do on every movie. It wasn't a new challenge necessarily, but it was one I think we were extra-excited for because of the nature of what this movie means to people."

With so much anticipation building up over Captain Marvel, it looks like Larson's debut into the MCU is going to be just as successful as Wonder Woman.

Captain Marvel is set to release March 8, 2019.
