From being held captive as a POW in the Stalag Luft III camp, Buck Cleven managed to save his skin and escaped along with the others in the finale.

In Masters of the Air episode 9, Buck Cleven and Bucky Egan set up their plan to get away from the POWs group once they march across Germany. However, the plan doesn't go as well as they expected it to.

Buck blends in with the other men as they move from the camp to Moosburg. Amid the chaos, though, Buck's escape was no easy task.

He was nearly caught in front of a German soldier's gun until his best friend Bucky Egan stepped up to distract the soldier. Buck runs away, without news of Bucky tagging along.

So, did this happen in real life? Did Bucky sacrifice himself to save his friend?

While there's no recorded evidence that the sacrificial scene happened in real life, according to the American Air Museum, Buck Cleven essentially escaped alone.

Once Buck Cleven was out of their clutches from Moosburg, he "was back at Thorpe Abbotts twelve days later."

Bucky Egan, on the other hand, was still a POW up until reaching the second camp months later.

It is worth mentioning that Bucky Egan and the rest of the 100th Bomb Group were left behind, remaining as POWs until the spring of 1945. They eventually came together and kept their friendship despite the traumatic event.
