Bryan Singer Tries and Fails to Explain Unresolved X-Men: Days of Future Past Twist

Before Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan were released many thought X-Men: Days of Future Past was the best film in the series' franchise. It was funny, had some great action, and felt a bit unpredictable, especially with the ending essentially erasing the events from X-Men: The Last Stand. However, it does have one major flaw; a twist ending that goes absolutely nowhere.

As many people know, Days of Future Past ended with William Stryker and his team capturing Wolverine again. The twist, however, was that Stryker ended up being Mystique. What does this mean? Why would she pretend to be Stryker? No one knows though director Bryan Singer has tried explaining it.

On Instagram, Singer revealed that the ending was only thought out in the last minute but does feel like it teases Mystique's mission in X-Men: Apocalypse; saving other mutants. While it is a decent enough defense from Singer, it doesn't answer the major question; why was Wolverine still in Weapon X during Apocalypse? Does this mean Mystique didn't bother saving him and just transformed as Stryker for laughs?

Singer gets points for trying to make sense of this but the fact that Wolverine still ends up in the Weapon X facility after Mystique supposedly saves him is a huge plot hole. Here is hoping that X-Men: Dark Phoenix doesn't make the same mistakes.

Dark Phoenix comes out on February 14, 2019.
