Technically, Blood-C is the second anime series in the Blood franchise, with the first being the 2005 series Blood+. It’s not exactly a sequel though as it is only connected to the first series thematically.

As for its plot, Blood-C follows Saya Kisaragi, a shrine maiden of a Shinto shrine in a rural town near Lake Suwa.

Despite her normal appearance, Saya is a skilled swordsman who is tasked with taking down Elder Bairns. These are monsters that feed on human blood.

While the story starts a bit slow, the series takes a turn for the surreal as Saya begins finding cracks in her reality.

Blood-C did not get great reviews from many viewers back when it aired in 2011. Since then, the series has gotten more love from horror fans thanks to its memorable atmosphere and surreal twists.

The first Blood+ anime was produced by Production I.G, the studio behind shows like Psycho-Pass and Heavenly Delusion. I.G also returned to animate Blood-C, along with its follow-up anime film, The Last Dark.

Another interesting thing about the show is that it was co-created by CLAMP, the renowned manga artist group behind iconic titles like Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHolic.

CLAMP did not work on the first Blood anime, though the group helped create both Blood-C and The Last Dark anime films. Their style can be clearly seen in the show’s character design.
