Black Panther 2, The Batman Among the Films Included in BAFTA Awards 2023 Longlist

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced today the longlists for the 24 categories in this year's film awards. The names that were included in the list came as a result of the round one voting where members/juries decided from hundreds of selections before tallying up to a small selection.

The recent MCU film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever showed up in four categories of the longlists including Supporting Actress (Angela Bassett), Costume Design, Makeup and Hair, and Special Visual Effects. The first film received its sole nomination in the latter category.

This is particularly exciting in the case of Bassett since it adds up to her awards buzz this season as she is being considered one of the frontrunners in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars. If she ends up getting nominated here, it will mark her first-ever career BAFTA nomination.

Avatar: The Way of Water, which is currently ruling the box office in cinemas, missed out on several key categories such as Best Film and Best Director for James Cameron. It only showed up in Production Design, Special Visual Effects, and Sound. The film was previously expected to perform very well here.

The Batman was able to show up in six below-the-line categories including Cinematography, Makeup and Hair, Original Score, Production Design, Special Visual Effects, and Sound. It had similar performances back when the Academy Awards also revealed its shortlists in some of their categories.

Some of the major tentpole films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Jurassic World Dominion were able to make it to the longlist in the Special Visual Effects category.

This is certainly exciting for these films since they are one step closer to getting a nomination. It would be interesting to see if they'll end up making the final list which will be announced this January 19.
