Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is more than just a crazy film about a group of women who team up to go up against a gangster boss. The movie also revealed some surprising things about Harley Quinn, and that includes her sexuality.
In Birds of Prey, Harley doesn't waste time in explaining why she and Joker broke up. The film opens with this story but she somehow goes back a bit further to reveal her origin story. Amazingly, Harley reveals that she was sent to a nunnery by her own father but she managed to finish medical school. Although she was ready to take on the world, she also shared how her heart was broken several times before she even met the Clown Prince of Crime.
Harley confirms she had a few boyfriends and even a girlfriend before she ended up dating Joker. Her bisexuality is confirmed through a cartoon and even hinted at when she first meets Black Canary. However, nothing else happens between the two other than a fleeting flirtation.
We're not surprised that Harley is actually bisexual. After all, she does have a special relationship with Poison Ivy in the comic books. Sadly, this side of Harley isn't explored since there are bigger things to deal with in Birds of Prey. Nevertheless, we're expecting to see that Harley's sexuality will be addressed once again in future DC Extended Universe films.
