Birds of Prey Comic Writer Shares Major Complaint About DCEU Film

There is little doubt that Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) made several changes on the characters that appeared in the DC Extended Universe film. For instance, it made Harley Quinn the one person that helped create the Birds of Prey although it was Barbara Gordon who helped form the team in the comic books. Not surprisingly, Gail Simone has a lot to say about these changes.

Simone, who wrote for the Birds of Prey comics, took to Twitter to share her gripes about the film. The lengthy thread points out several changes that were made in the Warner Bros. movie but most notably, Simone is unhappy with how Cassandra Cain was altered in the film.

"I have held back commenting on this, mostly, because I wanted to see for myself. But essentially, this Cassandra Cain is a new character," Simone wrote. She also added that she enjoyed Ella Jay Basco's portrayal of Cass in the movie but also stated that, "she bears no resemblance to Cass."

"I don't think of it as an insult so much as a missed opportunity," Simone wrote. "Like basically all of the Asian martial arts characters of that era at the big two (I do not exclude myself from this at all), there's stuff in her early stores that reeks of exoticism and more. Fair enough."

"But she became so much more," Simone continued. "She was also one of the first truly successful solo Asian heroes at either company. Her struggles with speech and reading and socialization were hugely meaningful to so many people. I love Cass dearly, and this is not a Cass I recognize."

We're not surprised that Simone has singled-out Cassandra in Birds of Prey. Although Basco's character was a scenestealer and easily one of the most likeable characters in DCEU, she's also very different from the Cass in the comics. It's unclear why major changes were made, but we're still hoping that we'll see a more comic-accurate Cass in the future.

Birds of Prey is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
