Today’s a bittersweet day for Berserk fans. Berserk Volume 42 has just been released in Japan, and it’s the first new volume in the series since creator Kentaro Miura’s death over two years ago.
To mark the release, publisher Hakusensha has a special offer for fans where they can read the first 34 volumes of the manga for free for a limited time. Plus, the new volume is being celebrated at major Tokyo train stations.
Miura’s untimely passing may still hurt many fans of this iconic manga, but Berserk continuing might be the best outcome as Miura’s legacy lives on.
Remembering Kentaro Miura, an Icon of the Manga Industry
Kentaro Miura is perhaps one of the most respected figures in the manga industry thanks to his Berserk manga.
It’s fair to say that Berserk is one of the most influential manga works of all time as it has influenced a wide range of mangaka such as Vinland Saga's Makoto Yukimura and Attack on Titan's Hajime Isayama.
Aside from manga, Berserk is also a notable influence on FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games, as well as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise.
Miura passed away in May 2021 at age 54 due to acute aortic dissection. His untimely death was mourned by fans and fellow creatives from all over the world.
Because of his passing, the Berserk manga entered a hiatus. The series’ future was up in the air for the following year.
In June 2022, publisher Hakusensha revealed that Berserk will continue publication, with the series being worked on by Miura’s close friend, Kouji Mori, along with Studio Gaga staff members.

First Berserk Volume Since Miura’s Death Gets Released in Japan
It has been over a year now since the manga resumed, and finally, enough chapters have been released for a new volume.
Berserk Volume 42 is now officially available in Japan. To mark its release, posters promoting the volume were put up at the Tokyo Metro Shinjuku Station and the JR Shimbashi Station.
These posters depict a confrontation between Guts and Griffith. They will be displayed on the station until October 1, 2023.
Finally, Young Animal Web has a special ongoing campaign where fans can read Volumes 1 to 34 of Berserk for free. This promotion will be available in Japan until October 13, 2023.
For now, there’s no word yet on a release date for Berserk Volume 42 outside Japan.
