Avengers: Infinity War’s Stephen McFeely Explains Why Thanos Closes His Fist To Use The Stones

The six Infinity Stones might have given Thanos so much power in Avengers: Infinity War, but according to one of the film's two writers, the design of the gauntlet holding the stones was actually introduced as a way of giving the members of the Avengers a slight chance at winning the fight.

Last week, Infinity War rolled out on digital HD and Blu-Ray. One of the bonus features included in the film's home release was an audio commentary from the film's directors and writers, and in the commentary, co-writer Stephen McFeely revealed one of the major reasons why Thanos had to close his fist to use the Infinity Stones (via ComicBook.com).

"As you can imagine, when you have a gauntlet that has nearly unlimited power, and every time you use it you can do what you want... we wanted to create small physical rules that would allow people to hang in a fight with him, so the idea that he had to, you know, close his fist to use a stone was the bare minimum that allowed us to have a fight," McFeely explained in the commentary.

In that particular scene on Titan, fans might have noticed that Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and his team actually do their best to keep Thanos from closing his fist and using the Infinity Stones.

"So that every choice they're making, you'll notice in that last minute of fighting, is to keep him from closing his fist. From Peter webbing it to the cape wrapping around it," co-director Joe Russo added.

That's not all. The team also nearly manage to remove the gauntlet from the Mad Titan's hands. Unfortunately, after Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) learns that Thanos had to kill Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to get the Soul Stone, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy loses control and punches Thanos, giving him space to regain control and take back the gauntlet from Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Tony.

Fans couldn't help but blame Peter Quill for Thanos' massacre after seeing the Mad Titan regain control, however, Star-Lord's actions seemed like an inevitability.

Avengers: Infinity War is now available on digital HD. The film will be made available on Blu-Ray on August 14.
