Avengers: Infinity War Director Explains Why Groot Was Able To Lift Thor’s New Axe

Marvel fans were pretty surprised when they saw teen-age Groot (Vin Diesel) lifting Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) new hammer in Avengers: Infinity War. Not only were viewers moved by Groot's decision to sacrifice one of his limbs to give Thor's new hammer its own handle, but they were surprised that the little twig could lift what would seem to be a magical axe related to Mjolnir, Thor's original hammer that can only be lifted by those "worthy of it."

Attending the Vudu Viewing Party for Avengers: Infinity War, a fan decided to ask directors Anthony and Joe Russo whether Groot was "worthy" like Thor. However, it doesn't seem to be the case.

Replying using the official Avengers account on Twitter, the Russo brothers explained that the enchantment of worthiness that Odin originally placed on Mjolnir in no way transferred to Thor's new axe, Stormbreaker.

"Mjolnir requires worthiness, not Stormbreaker," the Russos explained in their post.

For those who can't quite remember the scene, Thor travels together with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot to forge a new weapon in the Dwarven planet Nidavellir. Thor lost his brother and his people to the Mad Titan during the opening of Infinity War, and at this point in the film, the Asgardian God of Thunder is out for revenge. Though the team finds the planet frozen and lifeless when they arrive, Thor, Groot, and Rocket manage to forge an axe with the help of King Eitri (Peter Dinklage) and at the end of the film, Thor uses the new weapon to deal a strong blow at Thanos.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently available on Digital HD and on Blu-Ray.
