Coming back in theaters after 13 years are the Na'vi people as everyone gets to return to Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water which has been projected to be the biggest film of the year. True enough, its numbers are closing in on Top Gun: Maverick and may dethrone it as the highest grossing movie of 2022 worldwide.
Avatar: The Way of Water officially passed through the $1 billion mark for its worldwide box office last Tuesday at $1.48 billion and its numbers are continuously growing, that, for today, it is expected to close in at $1.5 billion or even more.
That being said, once it brings in $1.5 billion or more, Avatar: The Way of Water will become the highest grossing film of 2022 worldwide, dethroning the current title holder of it, Top Gun: Maverick, with $1.489 billion under its belt.
The release of Avatar: The Way of Water in China makes a lot of difference as the said country contributes the highest numbers for the sequel factoring in $165.5 million.

The projections of Avatar: The Way of Water have already been surpassed and now, the question is whether it will pass through the box office of the first Avatar movie which was once the highest grossing film of all time and had around $2.922 billion after its re-release last year.
Currently, Avatar: The Way of Water sits at the 12th spot of the biggest releases of all time globally, overtaking Frozen II, and with the hype on the James Cameron sequel still on, it is projected that the movie will just go up the ranks, possibly even securing the highest rank.
