Aquaman: James Wan Talks A Deleted Scene That Was Too Violent

Director James Wan is best known for his work in horror and action, so everyone was kind of curious to see what he would bring to a movie like Aquaman. Though the movie is generally kid-friendly, Wan talks about a deleted sequence that could have ended up too violent on the big screen.

Wan talks to Collider about a breakout scene that would have included shark guards and a cloud of blood:

"He had a really quirky out-there [sequence]…it wasn't the studio, it was me that said, ‘I don't know if we can have that in there, that's a bit weird.' As much as I loved it. He had this sequence where…Aquaman has been apprehended by King Orm and he's been thrown into this dungeon. Like this really awful prison deep in Atlantis. He ends up starting a prison riot, where all the guards are sharks.

They were shark-guards, like all shark head…and he kills one of the shark guards and the shark starts bleeding and then that starts a feeding frenzy among all the other shark guards. It just went nuts. We're talking like clouds of blood billowing everywhere and he uses that to escape. I was like "Holy crap, I don't know if I can do that."

Though you could say that Aquaman does have some horrific elements to it, I don't think any of them were of the violent nature. Mostly the horror comes from a Lovecraftian influence; if you watch closely you could also see an H.P. Lovecraft book in the beginning flashback of the film with Aquaman's parents.

For now, DC is once again at the top with Aquaman, and the movie is said to have already made more money in China in its 10-day run compared to Captain America: Civil War. Personally, I thought the film was kind of predictable, but I have to hand it to the production for making such a jaw-droppingly beautiful movie. Who knew a world under the sea could end up so colorful?

Catch Aquaman in US theaters Dec. 21.
