Aquaman Beats Captain America: Civil War’s Ten-Day Record In Chinese Box Office

Aquaman may have yet to swim its way to cinemas here in the US, but Jason Momoa's first standalone film as Arthur Curry has already been screening in cinemas in China for the past ten days, breaking box office records in the country.

Completing ten days of its run in China, CBR reports that Aquaman has managed to pull in more than $189 million at the East Asian country's box office market, beating out the 10-day box office record originally set by Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. The film raked in $155.8 million in China during its first ten days in the country back in 2016 – during that time the number was considered a feat.

But that's not all. Aquaman nabbed the best opening for a film from the DCEU at the Chinese box office ever since the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in 2016 and now the movie is the highest earning DC movie in China. In ten days time, the film has also become the fourth highest earning comic book movie in the country, right behind Avengers: Age of Ultron, Venom, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Of course, the film still has a long way to go till it completes its run in China, so who knows where the film might end up. Maybe Aquaman might even be able to beat out Venom during the end of its run. The film's got pretty good chances – not only has it been showered in positive reviews, but it's also been compared to major tentpole franchises like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

Aquaman comes swimming into cinemas December 21, 2019.
