Aquaman: James Wan Explains Arthur and Orm's Underwater Duel

There's a lot to take in from the new Aquaman trailer, but one of the scenes that definitely stood out was this duel between Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson). Director James Wan gives us an idea on what the scene is supposed to set up for.

Apparently, it's an ancient ritual to settle who will become king of Atlantis. Wan tells Fandango:

"It's basically the combat of the kings. It's an ancient ritual. It's a practice. It's like, ‘Okay, if you think you have the right to be the king,' which Arthur has the right to be the king because he is the first born. Orm wants him to prove it, basically. We do have a scene in it that is in the trailer where basically you see the two of them dress up in gladiatorial armor, ancient armor that they get to duke it out in a colosseum, an ancient colosseum built into the cone of a volcano.

Wan had also expressed that he wanted the scene to take place in a volcano so he could contrast the hot lava along with the blue, cool look of the city above them.

While most DCEU films have villains that have no personal stake with the heroes, it would be interesting to watch Arthur Curry go against his brother. Sure Arthur may be the firstborn, but his brother is pure Atlantean. Arthur was said to have been rejected by his people due to his half-human heritage.

Admittedly, the Aquaman trailer was not my favorite coming out of SDCC 2018, but the film still looks like it's worth checking out. After such a long hiatus since Justice League, I'm just happy to get a new superhero movie that isn't from Marvel.

Aquaman comes out Dec. 21.
