Aquaman Director James Wan Set Out To Helm Horror Movie Before Returning To DCEU

Aquaman might have been one of the most successful entries in the DC Extended Universe, but it looks like director James Wan plans to work on a new horror movie before returning to the franchise to direct the DC film's watery sequel.

According to a report by Deadline, James Wan is currently set to helm a new horror movie for New Line media before returning to the DCEU to begin production on Aquaman 2. There isn't that much information about the horror movie now, but apparently Wan is also going to co-write the film's script together with Ingrid Basu along with directing the project. The filmmaker is also serving as the project's co-producer together with Michael Clear under Wan's Atomic Monster banner.

As much as DC fans would want to see Wan head straight to work on Aquaman 2, this new report shouldn't come as a surprise to the fanbase. Back in June, the filmmaker told the media that his next project still wouldn't be Aquaman 2, explaining that he wants to try new challenges before returning to the DCEU.

Of course, this shouldn't really alarm DC fans as much – Wan is, after all, returning to work on the Aquaman sequel.

A cinematic spectacle, the original Aquaman movie focused on Arthur Curry's (Jason Momoa) origin story. Though there isn't that much information about Aquaman 2 yet, we're hoping to see more of underwater cities and underwater fight scenes.

Aquaman 2 is set for release on December 16, 2022.
