How The Comedian Has a Presence in HBO’s Watchmen

For a while, everyone thought that the only original Watchman showing up in HBO's Watchmen was Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons), but it's recently been revealed that Silk Spectre is actually part of the show in the form of Jean Smart's Laurie Blake. What's interesting is, her new alias in the series is calling back to one of the most despicable characters in the original comic—The Comedian.

In the original Watchmen comic, Silk Spectre is called Laurie Jupiter, with her mother being the original Spectre, Sally Jupiter. In the latest trailer, she introduces herself as FBI agent Laurie Blake, and if you've read your comics, you'll know that Blake is the surname of the Comedian a.k.a. Edward Blake.

We don't really know what prompted this name change for Laurie yet. Is she in hiding? Did she want to shed away the Jupiter name so she won't be marked as a former superheroine? Hopefully, things get answered when the show comes out.

Though the Comedian did outright try to rape Sally Jupiter in the comics, they eventually came together years later and consummated a romance—resulting in Laurie. We know that Sally eventually ends up remembering Blake fondly, but Laurie's name change could mean that she's found a newfound respect for her actual father.

Of course, I'm just guessing here. I just hope the show has a satisfying answer to the way things are.

With Ozymandias, Dr. Manhattan, and Silk Spectre confirmed for a return, the only other Watchman we haven't had a clue about is Dan Dreiberg a.k.a. Nite Owl. The trailer does give us a look at his Owlship, but so far, we have no clue what actually happened to Dan.

HBO's Watchmen is set to come out this October.
