Aquaman Director Acknowledges Marvel’s Most Surprising And Incredible Achievement

Marvel might be doing so much better than the DC Extended Universe, but Aquaman director James Wan isn't afraid to name the great things the studio does in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the DCEU director went on to acknowledge one of Marvel's greatest strengths in building a cinematic universe, and that's the propensity of turning unlikely characters into big names – something that DC's struggled to do with the superhero character, Aquaman.

"I actually think the most incredible thing [Marvel] did is making Captain America and Thor accessible to the mainstream — especially outside of the United States," Wan told the publication. "The moment you can make a character called ‘Captain America' work in Russia and China, then anything is possible."

Back before Jason Mamoa was given the role, Stephen Curry was one of the hardest characters to kick off. Sure Aquaman might be one of the comic book franchise's most recognized characters, but he's also one of the most joked about superheroes, and DC had to make some major changes to the character when they gave the role to Game of Thrones alum, Momoa.

"I told them that I understand and respect that Aquaman is part of a bigger universe but at the end of the day I have to tell the story I want to tell and want to develop the character because it's such a big part of my life as the filmmaker behind it," Wan went on explaining "And that was something the studio was respectful about."

Now, with a new look and a new feel to him, there's a lot of excitement building up over Momoa's version of Stephen Curry. Sure Justice League might not have been the best film for Curry to debut in given its poor performance at the box office and its poor reception by fans and critics, but everyone's gearing up for Aquaman to make his mark in his own standalone the same way Gal Gadot's Diana Prince did in Wonder Woman.

We can't wait to see what Wan has for the fanbase.

Aquaman hits cinemas December 21, 2018.
