Maomao is a 17-year-old girl in ancient China, working in the imperial court as an indentured servant.
The young girl manages to keep her indomitable, pragmatic spirit but has little hope other than waiting for her years of servitude to pass.
When the emperor's two infant children fall ill, Maomao uses her knowledge as a pharmacist to help them.
This causes a high-ranking eunuch to recognize her gift in medicine and give her a place in the inner court, where she solves many medical mysteries.
What Happened Before The Apothecary Diaries Episode 17?
In The Apothecary Diaries Episode 16, Maomao is tasked with solving the mystery of a metal worker Lakan knew, who died unexpectedly and left several items to his three sons.
The eldest has gotten a metalworking shack, the second a chest with a locked and stuck central drawer, and the youngest a glass fishbowl, with a note asking them to have a tea party as they used to.
By recreating the family's usual tea ritual, Maomao sees a sunray shining from the bowl right to the lock, which helps her solve its mystery.
When opened, the drawer reveals several metals, which the two eldest brothers dismiss as a joke because they think that their late father had favored the youngest.
However, the youngest son makes them understand that their father valued them equally, respecting their different skill sets, so they continue working together.
The youngest son takes over the father's workshop, while the middle son, who has the best interpersonal skills, secures deals with customers, and the eldest, whom the father admired for his precision, takes over the bookkeeping.
Realizing that the father died from lead poisoning, Maomao advises the brothers to seek out her father, Luomen, if they feel sick.
Back in the palace, Jinshi discusses the outcome with Lakan before asking Maomao if she can help him with makeup.
