Anthony Mackie Admits He 'Hated The Idea' of Sam Wilson Becoming Captain America

There is little doubt that everyone has been expecting Sam Wilson to take over for Steve Rogers for a long time now. However, there's one person who wasn't initially thrilled with the idea. Anthony Mackie has just admitted that he "hated the idea" of Sam becoming the new Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

When the series started, Sam was clearly unsure about taking on the Captain America mantle. The first episode saw the Falcon surrendering the shield Steve had given him in Avengers: Endgame.

Interestingly, Mackie revealed that he had not thought about Sam taking over since he believed that there was a chance that Bucky Barnes might be the one to do so.

"We never talked about that when the pitch of the show came about it. It was more so about the continuation about what was gonna happen with the shield, if it was gonna be Bucky or if it was gonna be Sam, Because at the end of Endgame, Sam didn't accept the shield," Mackie said during an interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

"He told Steve, ‘It feels like this is someone else's, it feels like it's yours.' So at no point in time was he excited or looking forward to the idea of becoming Captain America," he continued.

Mackie then shared that Marvel boss Kevin Feige and series executive producer Nate Moore had assured him that Sam will not actually become Captain America just yet.

"So it was more so Kevin and Nate telling me, ‘We're not sure what's happening, so the show will be more about the idea or the archetype of Captain America, not you becoming Captain America.' So I was really confused leaving out of the meeting. But I wasn't excited either," he stated. "I hated the idea. I thought it was gonna be an awful idea," Mackie concluded with a laugh.

It's not exactly a surprise that Mackie was uncertain about becoming Captain America. After all, most people believed that the world was not yet ready for a new Captain America, especially not a Black one. Luckily, things worked out in the end and now we can look forward to seeing Sam in his own movie.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is still streaming on Disney+.
