It may have started as more of a Western practice, but even Japan has gotten in on the April Fools’ pranks. In fact, many anime titles took part in April Fools during the weekend with some hilarious fake series announcements and collabs.

On April 1st, several games and anime titles joined in the April Fools fun, including well-known shows like Re:Zero, Oshi no Ko, and many more.

After announcing that Season 5 is coming this July, Bungou Stray Dogs also had a surprise announcement on April 1st.

The show’s official Twitter account revealed a new key visual for the supposed Gakuen Bungou Stray Dogs anime.

As its name and the visual implies, this anime features Bungou Stray Dogs cast in a high school setting.

While high school spinoffs are quite popular, this one turned out to be an April Fools’ prank.

Next, The Quintessential Quintuplets also joined the fun as the official mobile game announced that a sixth bride candidate will appear.

The announcement even came with a convincing key visual, though it proved to be a fake.

While another bride contender is a funny addition, the show would have to change its title to The Quintessential Sextuplets if a surprise sibling was supposed to appear.

Another anime that had an “announcement” is Re:Zero as a magical girl spinoff was shown via a new key visual.

Rem and Ram in magical girl outfits instead of their signature French maid clothes look fitting for them.

For those who want to see them as magical girls though, this is sadly just a prank announcement.

Aside from fake reveals, there were also some April Fools’ anime collabs. For instance, there’s the Jujutsu Kaisen x Pui Pui Molcar collab that was highlighted on Twitter.

This unexpected collab got a lot of attention, but given the date of its reveal, many fans quickly sensed that this is just a prank for April 1st.

Another convincing post is Oshi no Ko which shared a new visual that announced how Kana Arima is now a baking soda ambassador.

This is a funny reference to a joke in the manga about how Ruby Hoshino thought Kana is "the genius child actor who licks baking soda."

It doesn’t translate well in English, but this is a wordplay on Kana’s title of "the genius child actor who can cry on the spot."

These are just some of the April 1st highlights from various Japanese anime and games, all of which are listed handily on Animate Times.
