American Born Chinese Stars Claim Putting On Monkey Prosthetics Was 'Annoying'

American Born Chinese may have been all about teenager Jin Wang but it also featured a fun and interesting spin on the Monkey King's story. However, putting on all the monkey prosthetics wasn't always a load of laughs for Jimmy Liu and Daniel Wu.

American Born Chinese Actor Jimmy Liu Says Monkey Prosthetics Were 'Annoying'

In American Born Chinese, Jin Wang meets Sun Wei-Chen (Liu), who turns out to be the son of Sun Wukong aka the Monkey King (Wu).

Although Jimmy Liu and Daniel Wu spent most of their time looking like regular human beings, they had to endure several hours on the makeup chair to transform into their characters' godly appearances.

In a recent interview with Collider, Jimmy Liu admitted he initially thought the prosthetics were cool but was soon annoyed by all the makeup.

"It's annoying," he said.

"At the beginning, I thought it was pretty fun because I could be like a monkey and hairy, and I was always touching the hair, and it's pretty fun, but it started to get annoying because you have to sit there for three hours," Liu continued.

You have to get to on set three hours early just to put the special makeup on, and you have to stay for another hour to take it off," he added.

Daniel Wu agreed, claiming that he enjoyed everything about the series except the time he spent on the makeup chair.

"Working on set with these guys was the fun part," Wu said. "The not-fun part was getting the makeup put on, and remember Jimmy, we had a 2:00 AM call time so that we could shoot by 6:00 AM?"

He continued, "That scene in the first episode, in the first scene where I'm confronting him about getting my staff back, we had to shoot that at magic hour."

"So to do that, we had to be up by like 1:30 in the morning, and then in the makeup van by 2:00 AM so they could be camera-ready by six AM," Wu added. "It was a crazy couple of days doing that."

We're certainly glad that the actors made it through all the trouble and the locker scene was one of the best things about American Born Chinese.

All eight episodes of American Born Chinese are now streaming on Disney+.
