Amazing Spider-Man #800 ended up being one hell of a climax for Dan Slott's long run with the series. Featuring artists he's collaborated with in the past and 80 pages of story, it's easily worth the US$9.99. Of course, you can't have a huge climactic battle in comics without someone ending up dead and Slott chose to kill a fan favorite character.
Red Goblin, the Green Goblin Norman Osborn with the Carnage Symbiote, was able to infect Peter's loved ones with a piece of the symbiote that would have fatally wounded them. However, that was thwarted by Peter's former bully and best friend Flash Thompson, thanks to the Anti-Venom suit he has.
Unfortunately, Thompson used most of his Anti-Venom powers to save Peter's loved ones and the little bit he had left wasn't enough to protect him from Red Goblin's wrath. Thompson was killed by Red Goblin via his electrical gloves that he kept since he still has the Green Goblin suit under the symbiote.
Enraged the symbiote-powered Spider-Man, who was lent the symbiote by Venom himself, almost loses control before Flash snaps him out of it. With his dying words, he tells Peter that the world needs him.
If there is one thing good that happened to Flash before dying, it was that he found out Peter was Spider-Man before passing away. This means a lot since Flash loved and idolized the hero so much that he was inspired to join the army, losing his legs in the process. Peter then gives a heartfelt eulogy at the end, drawn by next month's artist for ASM #801 Marcos Martin, telling Flash that he was his fan and that he was a real hero.
Will Flash's death be permanent? Probably not, but if it does this was one way to get fans emotional. Thompson has been around since the very first appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 and was even Venom at one point.
