5 lbs of Pressure: Luke Evans' Adam Gets His Redemption

5 lbs of Pressure follows the story of an ex-con named Adam DeSalvo (played by Luke Evans), who gets out of prison after 16 years.

At the beginning of the film, the themes have always been simple: a redemption arc for Adam's past crimes.

As Adam tries to keep his nose clean by getting a fresh start in the same city where he grew up, he is confronted by the brother of the victim he killed years ago; the reason he landed himself in prison in the first place.

All Adam wanted was to meet and get to know his son Jimmy (played by Rudy Pankow) and stay out of trouble.

Due to this newfound purpose, he works a steady job, introduces himself to his son, and consistently attends his Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings.

However, things almost immediately go south when Adam runs into a couple of drug dealers he used to know.

Not only does Adam have to keep himself in check, but he also has his son to worry about, in the sense that Jimmy should not turn into a second version of him.

As much as the brother of Adam's victim, Eli (played by Zac Adams), finds it difficult to start fresh as he did, he ends up seeking revenge against the culprit himself.

This then becomes the very central story of 5 lbs of Pressure, apart from it being a metaphor for how to handle pulling the trigger of a gun.

While Adam does get to live the second chance he got in life, he tells Eli that he can't change what he did to his brother, as he's dead.

For a moment, when Adam wanted to help Eli get up from the floor, there was hope that he would live to see the day he gets to redeem himself.

That is until the camera panned outside of the bar with nothing but the sound of a gunshot heard from the bar.

In the next scenes, we don't see Adam anymore, seemingly confirming that he died for his crime, still.

We do get to see Adam live his second life through the drawings he had in his sketchbook.

The sketchbook is filled with a couple of drawings of his son, Jimmy. The movie then ends with a gut-wrenching feeling for the family he should have been with.

5 lbs of Pressure premiered in select theaters on March 8.
