2019 Academy Awards Nominations Includes Major Comic Book And Science Fiction Movies

The Academy just announced its list of nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards and it looks like some major comic book and science fiction movies made it to the list.

Marvel fans are in certainly in for a treat today. Not only did Avengers: Infinity War nab a nomination for Best Visual Effects alongside Steven Spielberg's science fiction film Ready Player One and Lucasfilm's Star Wars spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story, but groundbreaking Marvel entry Black Panther managed to make it to the Academy's list of Best Picture contenders.

Not only was Black Panther the first standalone film for Chadwick Boseman's King of Wakanda, but it was also Marvel's first all-black comic book movie. Black Panther broke so much ground for diversity in the Hollywood industry, its success proving to analysts that movie-goers were looking for more representation in the films that they get to see in cinemas.

Meanwhile, in the animated film category, comic book favorites like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Pixar's Incredibles 2 made it to the list along with other contenders like Disney's heartbreaking Ralph Breaks The Internet, Wes Anderson's gorgeous Isle of Dogs, and the Japanese animated film, Mirai.
