SPOILER WARNING for 1883 Season 1.

1883 Season 1 Episode 10 this weekend will be a gut punch — after all, Elsa Dutton is almost certain to die in the finale.

When 1883 premiered, the first thing fans saw was Isabel May's travel-weary Elsa being shot in the stomach with an arrow. That agonizing moment finally arrived at the point in the story where viewers saw the circumstances leading up to the potentially fatal impaling.

But rather than just telling viewers about what happened and then resolving the situation in a genuinely optimistic manner, 1883 made it appear as if the season finale will permanently remove one of the show's key characters.

Why Was Elsa Dutton Shot With An Arrow?

While it appeared at first that Elsa awoke in the midst of a battlefield, the circumstances that led to her injuries were not that straightforward, but it all started with a group of racist jerks.

James, Brennan, and Thomas arrived at the ruins of a Lakota village where all the women and children had been slaughtered while the husbands were off hunting. Knowing they would be held accountable for the disasters if they were discovered, the three men went out and murdered those responsible. But that meant they weren't there to help the rest of the wagon train when they were identified.

When the Lakota men discovered the wreckage, they naturally proceeded on the hunt for the perpetrators, but they ended up finding Elsa and her companions instead. Despite the fact that the eldest Dutton offspring selflessly attempted to lead the warrior clan away from the rest of her own group, there was still a massive attack that killed many people and left Elsa with an arrow sticking out of her torso.

Does Elsa Dutton Die in 1883 Season 1 Episode 10?

If 1883 had been a one-and-done standalone prequel planned to last only one season, we would have expected Elsa's death, as it would be quite the statement to hang the series on. But now that we know Season 2 is on the way, as well as a completely different prequel timeline, we're anxious to see if Sheridan did, in fact, decide to remove her from the equation going forward.

How strange would it be to have someone else narrate 1883 Season 2? Or would she continue to narrate from her ghostly point of view? So many questions, and only a few days till they'll be answered...hopefully.

1883 Season 1 Episode 10, the finale, airs on Paramount+ on Sunday, Feb. 27.
