Zachary Levi Shares His Current Situation With the DC Bosses Regarding Future Projects

Upon its premiere, Shazam! Fury of the Gods struggled to win over both critics and audiences. Its predecessor might not be all blockbuster, but the fun it comes with works for the moviegoers, but now the interest for the mightiest mortals is dying out as the superhero sequel failed to gross more than $100 million globally, effectively ruling out a threequel. Despite the obvious future that the Shazam family is facing, Zachary Levi, who portrays the titular hero, has been consistently asked if he has a future in the franchise, and he recently offered the current situation he seems to be under right now at the DC Studios.

“A business is a business,” the actor said. “So, they don't tend to make more products of something that didn't make them the money that they wanted, right? I would love to keep playing this role. I am literally paid to be an immature version of myself. I would highly recommend it. But, I don't know. And I haven't had any conversations about it. So, I'm just kind of here, living life!”

Levi joked in 2022 that if there were no plans for Billy Batson in the new DCU, his friendship with James Gunn and Peter Safran would no longer see the light of day. Asher Angel, his co-star, has also expressed interest in the character's future in the DC Universe, noting that he hopes Gunn will weave Shazam into the franchise's larger world. However, Gunn has not yet disclosed what he has in store for Shazam.

Despite Levi’s perception that the sequel is better than the first movie, the actor cannot deny the film's box office failure, which he attributed to both bad marketing and toxic Zack Snyder fans. "Sad, but true. How much that actually affects the box office is anyone's guess. But I think the biggest issue we're having is marketing. This is a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren't aware of that. Which is just a shame," said Levi to a Twitter user regarding the second movie's poor reception.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is still playing in theaters.
