Squid Game has been dethroned by the American TV series You from the number one spot on Netflix USA's charts.

According to Bloomberg, Squid Game ranked first on the streaming platform for 25 days before You premiered. Shortly after, the Penn Badgley-starrer beat out the Korean drama and ranked first on Netflix.

You premiered in 2018, and it follows the life of a bookseller cum serial killer who becomes obsessed with the women he's fascinated with. The series is based on the books written by Caroline Kepnes.

On the other hand, Squid Game follows the life of a group of Koreans who are struggling to pay their debts. They become involved in a series of deadly games that promises to reward them with millions if they end up as the sole winner.

Will Squid Game Season 2 Be Announced Soon?

But even though Squid Game has been dethroned, there's still no denying how successful the show's run was. The nine-episode series became one of South Korea's biggest TV shows to date.

The show's success has resulted in multiple discussions regarding a possible second season for Squid Game. As of late, nothing has been announced, but audiences are convinced that it's only a matter of time before director Hwang Dong-hyuk releases an official statement.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the director said that even though Squid Game ended in an open-ended manner, he initially thought that this was the best conclusion to the series.

But following the positive reactions that he received from fans, Dong-hyuk couldn't help but consider Squid Game Season 2.

"So if I end up creating season two, I'd like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun's story as he turns back, and explore more about how he's going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games. So, I don't know yet, but I'll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines," he said.

You Plot, Spoilers, Predictions Teased

Meanwhile, You has also been receiving rave reviews from fans. And the latest seasons proved to be much different compared to Seasons 1 and 2.

For the first time in the show's history, audiences caught a glimpse of Joe's (Badgley) complicated and terrible past.

Sera Gamble, who developed You for television, talked to E! News about Joe in You Season 3.

"He's been through a lot. He has felt a lot of heartbreak. He's been in a lot of scary situations, but in certain ways that are crucial so we can keep telling the story, he's not able to fully see himself. I don't think that a character who is built this way, a person who has this sort of psyche and life, is necessarily capable of it," Gamble said.

Unlike Squid Game, the fate of You is already known. The hit Netflix series has already been renewed for another season.

As of late, details from You Season 4 are still being kept under wraps. But there are predictions that the upcoming episodes will be set in a different location.
