It's no secret to many that there's an ongoing youth movement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Phase Four of the billion-dollar franchise has introduced us to the next generation of heroes who will one day lead the Avengers. Last year, Xochitl Gomez made her splashing debut in the MCU as the multiverse-traversing hero America Chavez and it was established right off the bat that she will be a key character in the Multiverse Saga.
Ms. Marvel also made her small screen debut and actress Iman Vellani immediately captured the hearts of audiences, thanks to the energy she brings. However, not everyone is thrilled with their MCU castings and they would find themselves on the receiving end of constant harassment from toxic fans.
It turns out that Gomez and Vellani, whose characters have yet to cross paths in the MCU actually discussed the horrid side of the MCU fanbase over dinner. Unsurprisingly, the parallels between their respective experiences led to them developing a unique bond.
In an interview with The Wrap, the Doctor Strange 2 star revealed: "It was just nice to be able to have these shared experiences that made me feel like, OK, I’m not the only one. And especially with harassment and haters and stuff, and being able to be like, ‘OK, it’s not just me, this happens to you, it happens to a few other people as well.’ But it’s like, sometimes, when it’s in the moment, you forget, and it just becomes like this thing of like, ‘What is going on to me?' And it’s just so much worse for brown people. Because there’s layers of racism, and it’s just, it’s tough."
"And so being able to talk to [Iman] and be like, ‘You’re not the only one,’ and being able to show my support, and being able to kind of take her out to dinner, and be able to take her mind off it, be able to like release it all. And then afterwards, being able to laugh and just be like, ‘Look at the conversation we just had!’ Look at that, we’re laughing, and it’s great."
