Star Wars has managed to set itself apart from other major franchises and despite being in the game for nearly 50 years, the franchise has yet to hit the reset button. The Marvel and DC Universes have reinvented their respective brands over the years but astonishingly, the Lucasfilm property remains untouched.

While it doesn't look like a full-blown reboot is in Star Wars' immediate future, a renowned filmmaker is setting his sights on potentially giving the franchise a fresh coat of paint.

Matthew Vaughn Believes Star Wars Needs to be Rebooted: "That'd Be Fun"

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matthew Vaughn was asked about the possibility of helming a Star Wars film, implying that he'd only entertain the idea if he were allowed to overhaul the entire thing, presenting audiences with a brand new take on the characters we all know and love.

The X-Men: First Class and Kingsman director shared: "For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters that I love. So if they said to me, 'Do you wanna reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, [Han] Solo, and Vader, and you do your own version of it?' everyone would say you're an idiot to try, but that would excite me."

"That'd be fun, why not? Bond ... you ask me who is going to play the next Wolverine, why are these characters so hallowed that, from 1977, you can't redo it for a new audience? Star Wars is the Skywalker family. And that's where, I think, they've gone wrong because they've forgotten ... And they've done brilliantly in the TV [world], but it needs an epic new film and that's what I would do."

The chances of Star Wars getting a reboot are quite slim at the moment, especially after it was confirmed that Daisy Ridley is returning to the franchise to pick up where the Skywalker Saga left off.

Heck, even the ongoing MandoVerse is still using characters from the original trilogy but that's not to say that Star Wars getting reimagined completely is out of the question. Maybe in 20 years?

The next Star Wars film is reportedly hitting cinemas in 2026.
