X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Believes The Film Is A New Chapter For The Franchise

Marvel fans might have a few hesitations about X-Men: Dark Phoenix after 20th Century Fox released a bland and lifeless trailer for the upcoming X-Men installment, but it looks like director Simon Kinberg expects a whole lot from the film.

While fans are eagerly waiting for the X-Men, Fantastic Four and all of Fox's other mutants to migrate to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the completion of the Disney acquisition, Kinberg strongly believes that Dark Phoenix would start something entirely new for the X-Men franchise.

Speaking in an interview with CinePop together with Dark Phoenix lead star Sophie Turner, Kinberg opened up about how the film would begin a new era for the X-Men film series.

"I see it as a new chapter," Kinberg said during the interview with the news outlet. "I see it as taking the franchise in a different direction tonally. And that doesn't mean that the next one will have the same tone, it just means that the next one can have a different tone. I think for many years, the X-Men, Bryan [Singer] really transformed the superhero genre in 2000 or 2001 when the first one came out. That's almost 20 years ago. It is a long time ago. And at that time, superhero movies were not wildly popular, actually. There had been a few failures in the mid-90s, and there hadn't been a lot of superhero movies, if any, around that time and X-Men sort of was revolutionary in its moment."

Now that we've reached 2018, Kinberg feels that the tone and atmosphere of the X-Men franchise ought to change along with the times.

"But that was 20 years ago and I think, I really felt like it time to really change the look, the feel, the tone, the vibe of these movies. And that doesn't mean this is the one going forward, it just means that if it's me or whoever directs the next one, you can make it different, and you have to make it different," the director concluded.

It seems like Kinberg wants to set up a new era for the X-Men franchise – something which might seem a bit counterproductive if Fox's Marvel properties were to ever make its way to the MCU. Knowing that the deal between Fox and Disney might see completion in 2019, Kinberg has very little time to establish a new era for the franchise before Marvel takes over.
