Despite Steve Trevor's apparent death in the first Wonder Woman movie, Chris Pine's character will make his return and reunite with Gal Gadot's Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984. Of course, how he managed to come back is still up in the air, with the actors revealing that their characters will switch roles for the upcoming film.

During a set visit (via Screenrant), Pine and Gadot talked about a role-reversal between Diana and Steve in the movie. "The first film is obviously very much Diana being a fish out of water," said Pine. "And then this one is fun for the audience and it's a total switch of that dynamic."

"So he's way less of the jaded realist in the war, the war pro that he is in the first one," he continued. "And this one is just, you know, boy transfixed by the wonderment of this incredible, incredible era of sophistication."

Now, Diana is the one who's "jaded" by her friends who have died, especially by her lover. "We've kind of reversed our roles," Gadot added. This role reversal ought to change the dynamic between the two. Steve is "not who he used to be," while Diana is a "little different."

The actress said this "plays from a different place" considering that Steve was Diana's first love. Their relationship is now "much more mature" and there are certainly "many longings." As Gadot pointed out, "it's true that you know what you had only after you lose it."

This role reversal can be briefly seen in the trailer, with Steve now learning the ropes while Diana is the one that explains things to him. It'll be interesting to see how this affects their relationship and we can't wait to see them (likely) team up against Cheetah and Maxwell Lord.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set for release on October 2.
