Wonder Woman 1984 Director Explains Why the Sequel Needs Two Villains

Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed to August for the greater good and we're all looking forward to seeing what the sequel has in store for us. Steve Trevor is miraculously returning, Cheetah and Maxwell Lord are going to make their DCEU debut, and the first trailer was crazy good so color us excited. However, some fans are wondering why the film needs two villains since more than one has derailed several superhero movies like Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Patty Jenkins has assured fans that the movie calls for two villains, pointing out how she only added Maxwell Lord as writing went on. Cheetah was meant to be the main focus but it looks like Lord will get himself involved in her creation somehow, which might be cool, tragic, or even both. We just want it to be cool and fun, to be honest.

"It turned out that the story was the thing that gave birth to the need for both. It wasn't that I thought I needed both. Cheetah was the villain that we were focused on having in this movie, but then Max Lord, throughout the history of Wonder Woman comics -- he serves a very mechanical purpose, often."

Lord will likely play a big part, not just here but maybe even in future DCEU movies. The man has been responsible for some of the biggest crimes in DC history, including killing the original Blue Beetle, so there's no way they would kill him off after one appearance. Then again, superhero movies have a knack for killing villains so they could end up doing that.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be coming out on August 14.
