Why the Royal Family is Silent Over Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's Allegations?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made several allegations against the royal family, from being racists to leaking stories to the press and more. But despite how worse the Sussexes' accusations are, the royals have remained silent.

So, what keeps the royal family from answering Prince Harry and Meghan's claims?

'Never Complain, Never Explain'

It has been the royal family's lifelong mantra to "never complain and never explain." They have clung to this motto since time immemorial—even amid the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's allegations.

In the military veteran's memoir, Spare, he alleged Prince William physically attacked him, Camilla, Queen Consort, leaked stories about his wife to the press, and Kate Middleton was unwilling to share her lip gloss with Meghan.

But despite the severity and the noise of these numerous claims, the royals have remained mum about it.

The Royal Family's History of Staying Silent

"Dignified silence is a tried and tested format," Katie Nicholl, Vanity Fair's royals correspondent and author of The New Royals, said via The Times. "The palace is reluctant to engage at any level because once they do, it just fuels the narrative and Harry has made so many allegations it's almost impossible to address every one."

Covering the royal family for almost 20 years, Nicholl described the institution's silence as a "sensible strategy."

Instead of tarnishing their image, it destroys Prince Harry's reputation instead.

But despite their silence, the father of two told Anderson Cooper in his 60 Minutes interview that the royal family does "a lot of complaining and explaining" to the press by leaking stories.

This will allegedly paint themselves in a better light or others negatively. It hides behind the claims that these publications reach out to Buckingham Palace for comment, but the palace itself is the source.

Only Speaking when Necessary

Nicholl added that the late Queen Elizabeth II mastered the art of only speaking publicly when necessary.

"The Queen only responded when she absolutely had to and it was often short and succinct," he continued.

After Prince Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah in 2021, the palace released a statement on behalf of Her Majesty, saying she was "saddened" to learn of their struggles and concerned by the allegations of racism and promising to address it privately.

The Deafening Silence

Though Prince Harry is aware that the royal family will not give any comment on everything he said; calling the silence "a betrayal and is defeaning" in an interview with Tom Bradby.

"There comes a point where silence is betrayal," he said, per Cosmopolitan. "The world is asking for some form of comment from the monarchy. But the silence is deafening. To put it mildly."
