Why Legendary Adapted Detective Pikachu Instead of a Mainline Pokemon Game

When Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was first announced, many fans asked the same thing; why? This made fans weary, with many thinking that this would be a cheap cash grab that wouldn't do justice to the series. Fast forward to the film coming out and many have dubbed this movie as the best video game and anime adaptation yet, though fans are still curious as to why it was this story chosen.

Benji Samit, one of the movie's writers, recently talked with GameFragger about the film and why Legendary decided to adopt an obscure 3DS game. Apparently, this really was the film The Pokemon Company wanted to see since the game introduced a world that would be appealing to audiences. This ended up working since it made people want to live in this world of Pokemon and people coexisting peacefully.

"I think they rightfully thought this weird side-game that most people were not familiar with was actually a really cool thing to see in live action. Ryme City and Pokemon and people living together is such a cinematic thing [and] that's what they wanted to do from very early on. When we first heard about it, we were like, 'Yeah, that sounds awesome!'"

Though this was a wise move, fans are hoping that they get a proper adaptation of the mainline games, particularly Red and Blue. Granted, some fans would argue that we have the anime for those fans but there's no denying that the CGI used for the film was incredible and we want to see more Pokemon rendered in this engine.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will be coming to Blu-Ray soon.
