The Reason Why Makoto Can't Talk in Tsukimichi

Tsukimichi's protagonist is unable to speak due to the whims of a cruel goddess who leaves him to his own devices, able to understand all languages except the humans' common tongue.

In Tsukimichi, Makoto Misumi gets transported to another world in true isekai fashion due to a pact made between his parents and a goddess.

Unfortunately for him, the goddess finds him too ugly. Revoking his heroic destiny, she grants him the ability to understand all languages except for the human language and leaves him to fend for himself.

Trapped in a new magical world away from human civilisation, Makoto grapples with newfound powers while trying to navigate his inability to communicate with other humans.

While Makoto doesn't have his voice or his ability to master new languages taken away, his curse forces him to resort to text bubbles to talk to other humans.

His "Mastery of Words" ability ultimately allows him to understand the common tongue, but when he tries to speak it, his speech comes out unintelligible.

Makoto's magic allows him to create speech bubbles to as a way of communicating with humans. While Makoto talks during these moments in the anime, in the world of Tsukimichi, he never actually speaks to them verbally.

Since telling the truth isn't always an option, he sometimes uses his text bubbles to tell others that a curse took his voice away.
