Elminster Aumar was one of the most famous and powerful wizards in Faerûn. He earned himself a legendary reputation when he had saved the people of Faerûn from destruction numerous times.

Simon Aumar is his great-great-grandson. Simon clearly comes from a great line of wizards, but he lacks confidence. John Francis Daley, co-director of the film, describes Simon as having to “learn to grow into his own and become the great sorcerer he was destined to become.”

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Elminster Aumar appears as a mentor to Simon. He appears in visions when Simon wears the Helmet of Disjunction, where time passes at a different rate. Elminster Aumar’s guidance helps Simon defeat the Red Wizard Sofina.

After retrieving the Helmet of Disjunction, Simon finds it difficult to attune to it and continually gets thrown out of the psychical plane by a vision of Elminster Aumar. This helmet serves as the key to breaking the enchantment on Forge Fitzwilliam’s vault. Simon’s failure to attune to the Helmet discourages him and he tells the gang to think of another way to break the enchantment on Forge’s vault.

However, after getting chased by castle guards, Simon tries using the helmet once again. He gets another vision of his great-great-grandfather, but this time, he chooses to be more confident in his abilities. The vision of Elminster turns into Simon himself. Simon then realizes that the person holding him back was himself, and that was when he was able to attune with the helmet.

Simon then becomes more confident and masters his abilities. This allows him to stop Sofina’s time spell when she attacked the gang. Thanks to Simon’s magical abilities and teamwork, the gang defeated Sofina and saved Neverwinter.
